Reliable House Furnishers has been part of the heart and fabric of Portlaoise since 1969.

Founded by Billy Rowan, what began as a small, ambitious local business on Station Road has grown into one of Laois’s longest-standing family furniture stores.

Interestingly, the shop didn’t start out selling sofas or beds. In its earliest days, it stocked bicycles and wireless radios. But as the years passed and the needs of local families changed, the business naturally evolved. Furniture and home furnishings became the focus — and that’s where Reliable House Furnishers truly found its identity.

From the beginning, it was a family affair. Billy worked alongside his brothers Harry and Douglas, building a reputation not just for quality products, but for honest advice and genuine customer care. Later, brother Ken also became involved. Over time, the next generation stepped in, continuing the tradition and keeping the business rooted in family values.

Through economic highs and lows, changing trends, and the rise of big retail chains, Reliable House Furnishers stayed true to what made it successful: fair prices, dependable service, and looking after every customer who walked through the door.
